Hyundai Genesis 2010

2010 Hyundai Genesis
The 2010 Hyundai Genesis sedan should see no major changes following its introduction for the 2009 model year. Hyundai's largest car offers two engines: a 290-hp 3.8-liter V6 for the 3.8; and a 375-hp 4.6-liter V8 for the 4.6. A new base model with a 3.3-liter V6 may join the sedan lineup sometime in the model year. Due later in model-year 2010 is the Genesis coupe. It's based on a shortened sedan platform and will be powered by a new turbocharged 4-cylinder or the 3.8-liter V6 shared with the sedan. Power estimates are at least 200 hp for the 4-cylinder and more than 300 for the V6. All sedan engines team with a 6-speed automatic transmission that has a manual shift gate. The coupes will offer a 6-speed manual as well as an automatic. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, front side airbags, and rear side airbags. Among the available sedan features are heated and cooled driver seat, wireless cell phone link, a navigation system with hard drive for storing digital music files, rearview camera, and front- and rear-obstacle detection. The Genesis sedan has a knob in the center console that governs audio, navigation, and other functions. Adaptive cruise control is available. This evaluation is based on preview test drives of the 2009 Genesis sedan.

Ford Fiesta 2011

2011 Ford Fiesta
Fuel-stingy minicars are back in vogue, thanks to escalating gas prices. Ford has long promised such a car for its U.S. lineup. In fact, it had one ready several years back, but canceled it on learning the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris would show up.

Since then, the Blue Oval has been working on what it thinks will be a more competitive minicar. Though Ford isn’t talking timetable or specifications yet, the three Verve concepts, unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show, 2007 Guangzhou Motor Show, and 2008 Detroit Auto Show suggest the showroom version is well on the road to completion. So does the debut of a new Mazda 2, which will parent the U.S. baby as well as a redesign of Ford’s popular European Fiesta. Right now, sources predict the American version--which will be badged Fiesta--will arrive in 2010 as a 2011 model.

The 2011 Ford Fiesta is another “world car” project a la Ford’s 1981 Escort and 2000 Focus. Like the original VW Beetle, the idea is a basic design that can be built and sold profitably the world over, because one car serving many markets drastically cuts development costs and raises profit potential. That’s why General Motors still dabbles with world cars, too.

In the past, though, Detroit “world cars” ended up with so many regional design and engineering changes that economies of scale were diminished, if not erased. The Focus is one example. At first, the U.S. and European models were quite similar. Then Ford Europe did a 2005 redesign that U.S. marketers deemed too costly. In other words, a Euro-based Focus would have been priced out of its U.S. market slot. Which is why our Focus still uses the original design, already paid for, albeit heavily updated for 2008.

Ford says Focus will be a “world car” again in its next incarnation, expected around 2011. There’s not much choice. Ford is running very low on cash and must leverage its global resources--that timeworn Detroit cliché--to get the most new model bang for the bucks it has. That’s why Ford CEO Alan Mullaly is busy spearheading a global product plan that aims for big savings by greatly trimming the number of platforms and parts in Ford Motor’s worldwide inventory. The increased sharing won’t be confined to small cars, either. Ford also plans to merge two different midsize sedans, the American Fusion and European Mondeo, into a single basic design, with only modest tailoring for various markets.

All this explains why the 2011 Ford Fiesta will be closely related to the next-generation Fiesta, but possibly sourced from low-wage Brazil or Mexico to achieve a competitive El Norte price. And because Ford now assigns small-car development to Japanese affiliate Mazda, which is plenty experienced that way, the Fiesta will be derived from the recently-released second-generation Mazda 2. That model isn’t coming here, but its good U.K. and Continental notices bode well for the North American Ford.

The 2011 Ford Fiesta will share a new B2E corporate platform with the Mazda 2, but have different styling (penned by Ford designers in Europe) and perhaps different powertrains too. It will look more conservative than the Verve concept, which Ford says suggests the general “design language” of the production car. But the concept is certainly expressive, as is the wedgy Mazda 2, so the showroom Fiesta won’t be another plain two-box appliance like the Fiesta sold here way back in 1977-1980.

Size wise, the 2011 Ford Fiesta should be close to the Fit, Yaris, Chevrolet Aveo and other so-called “B-Class” minicars, but a generous wheelbase versus overall length should make for a surprisingly roomy four-seater, judging by the Mazda 2. It’s front-wheel drive, of course, and a 4-door sedan body style is assured for the U.S. Two- and 4-door hatchbacks are likely for Europe and possibly for our side of the pond as well.

Powertrains should come from the Mazda 2, which in various markets offers twincam 4-cylinder engines of 1.3 and 1.5 liters. We’d guess the U.S. 2011 Ford Fiesta will get the 1.5 at least, or perhaps a 1.8-liter enlargement providing the extra low-end torque that’s always so helpful for U.S. driving conditions. Transmissions should comprise a 5-speed manual and an optional 5-speed automatic, also per the 2. Standard equipment should include antilock brakes, front torso side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Traction control will certainly be available, maybe even standard. Stability control is a likely option, as it is on the Mazda.

The 2011 Ford Fiesta will likely be powered by a 1.5-liter or 1.8-liter 4-cylinder. The European-market 2008 Fiesta is pictured here.

GMC Envoy 2009

2009 GMC Envoy
The 2008 GMC Envoy ranks 24 out of 26 Affordable Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 47 published reviews and test drives of the GMC Envoy, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The Envoy delivers a spacious interior and outstanding towing capacity. However, it falls short of the handling, reliability and value offered by competitors and ranks near the bottom of its class.

The 2008 GMC Envoy was launched in 2002 to replace the long-running Jimmy. The Envoy receives minor changes for 2008, including the addition of standard XM Satellite Radio and head-curtain airbags. Reviews say it provides a comfortable ride, but complain that its handling and interior quality are below-average. Forbes advises buyers to keep looking if they "want something sportier, more stylish or more reliable." Despite its all-terrain abilities, the Envoy ranks near the bottom of the class when compared only to other off-road SUVs.

The GMC Envoy has three available trims: the base SLE, the SLT, and the top-of-the-line Denali. All models are available as a 2WD or as a 4WD.

* "The current Envoy represents a vast improvement over its predecessor, but ultimately, it doesn't measure up to competitors. While its handsome exterior and roomy interior may attract consumers, GMC needs to come up with a better compromise between cushy ride quality and confident handling; specifically, it should lose some of the former to gain some of the latter." -- Carz Unlimited

* "More than a mere lifestyle accessory, the Envoy proved to have the goods over its year-long evaluation, whatever the chore or journey." -- Motor Trend

Envoy Performance - 7.1 (Good)
The 2008 GMC Envoy receives mixed performance reviews, with New Car Test Drive noting it is "well-engineered and enjoyable to drive, stable and responsive with good brakes and a superb inline six-cylinder engine." However, complaints about the four-speed automatic transmission, sloppy handling, and low fuel economy put the Envoy's performance near the bottom of its class. Continue with our full Performance Review to learn whether or not you should choose the more powerful V8 engine option.

Envoy Exterior - 8.8 (Very Good)
The 2008 GMC Envoy's exterior styling ranks near the top of the class. "Envoy has conservative, upmarket styling, yet has a masculine look that says it's ready to tackle the tough jobs," says Autobytel. "It looks more sophisticated than the TrailBlazer."

Envoy Interior - 7.5 (Good)
The 2008 GMC Envoy gets a good score for its interior, but its cabin still ranks in the bottom half of the class since many of its competitors offer a more refined design. Though the base model probably provides enough equipment for most buyers, note that you'll have to trade up to the other models if you want the optional navigation system or rear-seat DVD system. "On the positive side, loaded up the Envoy can feel as luxurious as almost any passenger car," says About.com. "Most times, it won't even feel like you're driving a truck." Continue with our Interior Review to learn whether those pricey features are worth the money, or check out our interior photos.

Envoy Safety - 6.5 (Mediocre)
The 2008 GMC Envoy gets a mediocre safety score partially because of its somewhat unfavorable crash test ratings. Standard safety equipment includes StabiliTrak electronic stability control and a tire pressure monitoring system. Continue with our full Safety Review to learn about the Envoy's complimentary year of OnStar services.

Envoy Reliability - 4.0 (Mediocre)
The 2008 GMC Envoy reliability score shown is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS). The 2008 Envoy comes with GM's three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty. Ferrari 612 Scaglietti 2008

2008 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti
The 2008 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is largely unchanged. This four-passenger, 2-door coupe is Ferrari's flagship car. The 612 uses a 540-hp 5.75-liter V12 engine that teams with a 6-speed manual transmission. Optional is Ferrari's 6-speed F1A automated-manual transmission that uses a small console stick to engage reverse and drive. Shifting is done through steering wheel paddles, but the transmission can be set to shift like an automatic. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, and an antiskid system. The antiskid system has driver-selectable settings to limit its intervention during high-performance driving. Neither front side airbags nor curtain side airbags are available. An optional GTB package includes uprated sport suspension, specific exhaust tuning, and carbon ceramic brakes designed to minimize heat during panic stops. This evaluation is based on preview test drives.

Honda Odyssey 2009

2009 Honda OdysseyHonda nailed the minivan formula with the third generation of the Odyssey, which debuted in 2005. The size is in line with the competition from Chrysler and Toyota, there are plenty of interior features, and—our favorite part—the Odyssey can actually be called fun to drive. We’ll qualify that last statement with “for a minivan,” but still, the Odyssey has sharp reflexes and a comfortable, smooth ride.

All four trim levels, LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring, come with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine; the latter two feature a cylinder-deactivation system that shuts off two or three cylinders to save fuel when they’re not needed. Power goes through the front wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission. The Odyssey doesn’t have trick folding second-row seats like those in the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country, but the third-row seat folds flat into the floor in a 60/40 split.

Verdict

The best minivan to drive, the Odyssey offers a smooth powertrain, handsome styling, and Honda build quality. The cabin is nicely appointed, and the van can be had with just about anything a family could ever want, from decadent stuff like a DVD entertainment system and a leather-lined cabin to minivan-crucial items such as a 115-volt power outlet and a conversation mirror to watch the kids in back.

What’s New for 2009

The exterior was freshened in 2008. For 2009, the cylinder-deactivation engine on the EX-L and Touring model gets a 3-hp increase in its power rating, up to 244—equal to that of the standard engine.

Highlights and Recommendations

As in other minivans, the price goes up according to features. So if you want power doors, rear-seat entertainment, navigation, and leather, you’ll have to pay the price. If you can cope with cloth seats, though, the EX comes with plenty of stuff: three-zone climate control, power doors, alloy wheels, and a power driver’s seat. Leather seats (heated for the front row) and a sunroof come standard on the EX-L, and this trim level is required if you want to option up to a navigation system or rear-seat entertainment. The Touring model is loaded, and priced as such, but the PAX System run-flat option should be avoided, considering the high replacement cost of the special tires.

Safety

Front, front side, and curtain airbags come standard, as do active head restraints in the front seats, stability control, and ABS with panic assist.

Chevrolet Corvette 2009

2009 Chevrolet Corvette
The 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 marks the return of an ultra-high-performance model to this American sports car icon. The rest of the 2009 Corvette lineup is largely unchanged. ZR1 represents a revival of a moniker that graced super-performance Corvettes from 1990-1995. The 2009 version has a supercharged 638-hp 6.2-liter V8 engine. It teams with a 6-speed manual transmission. ZR1 also differs from other Corvettes by its unique suspension tuning and use of lightweight carbon fiber on the hood, roof panel, roof bow, front fascia splitter, and rocker moldings. As for the rest of the Corvette lineup, base models are available as a coupe or convertible. Convertibles have a soft top that folds with manual or power operation, depending on model or option selection. All base Corvettes have a 430-hp 6.2-liter V8 engine. An optional "dual-mode" exhaust system increases horsepower to 436. They're available with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The high-performance Corvette Z06 is only available as a coupe and comes with a 505-hp 7.0-liter V8 and mandatory 6-speed manual transmission. Z06 models also have specific suspension tuning, tires, and brakes. Available safety features across the Corvette lineup include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, and front side airbags. Base models are available with GM's Magnetic Selective Ride Control that automatically adjusts suspension firmness within two driver-selectable modes. Also optional on base Corvettes is a high-performance Z51 package that has a firmer, nonadjustable suspension.
